In a world where four-wheelers all look a bit the same, one species stands out and delivers unique thrills. The 2011 Polaris® Ranger® XP® 800 fits that bill. Designed for work and play, this side-by-side UTV paves the way to a whole new realm of excitements and possibilities.
I've got to say I was a tad reluctant to make the transition from two wheels to four, and from a pair of handlebars to a classic steering wheel. Yet, it only took me a couple of minutes to enjoy and understand all the fun that this type of machine can provide. The Ranger® XP® 800 is a sport-oriented UTV, meaning that it can tow, pull, haul, and access the most difficult terrains just like other UTVs while making the driving experience both pleasant and comfortable.
Similar to a 4x4 pickup truck, the Ranger® XP® 800 will turn your toughest jobs at the farm or the cottage into child's play. It really makes working fun, no matter what you're towing, hauling, or crossing.
The 2011 Polaris® Ranger® XP 800 produces 50 hp on the strength of a liquid-cooled twin-cylinder derived from the brand&'s Sportsman® ATV lineup. Camshafts and engine maps have been revised and improved to deliver more power and torque.
The result is a high-performing side-by-side that excels under acceleration at any revs. Its light weight of 1,239 lbs (562 kg) and competent CVT sure help as well.
On the trails, the Ranger® XP® 800 proves surprisingly sporty yet compliant thanks to a suspension system that effectively absorbs the biggest bumps without overwhelming the occupants. In corners, the steering responds quickly and offers a short turning radius, which is vital for a crossover type of UTV such as this Polaris®.
Said steering requires very little effort from the driver at low speeds while firming up to provide stability and secure handling at higher speeds. One problem, though: The XP 800 tends to understeer quite a bit, especially when attacking bumpy turns. I attributed this weakness to a rear-biased weight distribution.
Anyhow, don't expect this rig to keep pace with true sport side-by-sides in sand pits or on enduro tracks. However, a long list of features, fun-to-drive character, great capabilities, and many other commendable attributes make the $12,999 2011 Polaris® Ranger® XP® 800 an exceptionally versatile competitor in its class. Basically, you get two machines for the price of one.
Overall, the lines embody typical Polaris® styling. The large tubular roll bars provide safety and confidence while making the XP 800 feel sporty a la RZR. The pallet-size rear dump box, sturdy bumpers, generous ground clearance, and commanding size together show just how seriously this beast can handle heavy work and off-road duties.
The cabin may look clean and understated, but you'll find everything you need: a comprehensive instrument panel, keyed ignition, gear shifter, hand brake, glove box, cup holders, 12V outlet, headlight switches, and on-demand AWD with locking differential. Of course, don't forget the plethora of optional accessories from the Polaris® catalogue.
