Known traditionally as "gas and oil" machines, All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) and Side-by-Sides are also starting to "go green". Polaris® Industries recently introduced their new Ranger® EV, a Side-by-Side built specifically for clean and quiet operation.

With the largest battery pack in the industry (11.5 kilowatts), the longest range of any electric midsize vehicle (80 km), 40 kph top speed and two hours of riding time between charges, the Ranger® EV operates at about $0.022 per kilometer versus $0.056 per km for a comparable gas vehicle, making it more economical to use.

In creating their first electric vehicle, Polaris® wanted to create an electric Side-by-Side that kept all the attributes of its other Ranger® vehicles.

To achieve this goal, Polaris® gave the Ranger® EV a 227 kg (500 lb.) cargo box with 567 kg (1,250 lb.) towing and 454 kg (1,000 lb.) total payload, to ensure the vehicle had a strong work ethic.

The transmission features three modes; High for speed, Low for towing and hauling, and Max for maximum range. On-Demand True All-Wheel Drive tackles harsh terrain and standard two wheel drive in normal conditions to prevent damage to sensitive terrains, making the Ranger® EV easier on the environment.

The model's exclusive 30 hp AC Induction motor provides high performance with low maintenance and can be charged using a standard 110 VAC outlet.

The Ranger® EV retails for $13,399 in Canada and will be available at Polaris® dealerships before the end of 2009.
